Freedom Quote

I believe that liberty is the only genuinely valuable thing that men have invented, at least in the field of government, in a thousand years. I believe that it is better to be free than to be not free, even when the former is dangerous and the latter safe. I believe that the finest qualities of man can flourish only in free air – that progress made under the shadow of the policeman's club is false progress, and of no permanent value. I believe that any man who takes the liberty of another into his keeping is bound to become a tyrant, and that any man who yields up his liberty, in however slight the measure, is bound to become a slave.

There are few things more important to the maintenance of freedom and liberty than an informed, vigilant and thoughtful populace. The responsibility rests with 'we, the people' to preserve the spirit of our nation, and, when necessary, to resist tyranny in its varied forms wherever we may find it.

It is with those thoughts in mind that I want to thank TheAdequateDer over at Music, Verbosity, and Anything Else for nominating ShadowMonkey.net for a 'Thinking Blogger Award.'

In keeping with the spirt of this Award meme, I'll now nominate five blogs for the award. There are a lot of people out there who are strong believers/activists in the fight to protect our freedoms and liberties — many more than the five I get to nominate. Those I have chosen to include are among the best that I know of, and although this Award meme is not centered on liberty-related blogs, my selections are. We could all do with a little more thinking about our freedom.

1. The Adventures of Citizen X
Citizen X is the quintessential freedom loving American. He is you and me. Join him as he searches for his lost liberties in the land of the free.

2. Strike the Root
Strike The Root is a daily journal of current events and commentary from a libertarian/market anarchist perspective. The mission of STR is to advance the cause of liberty, primarily by de-mystifying and de-legitimizing the State. STR seeks a world where people are free to live their lives as they see fit, as long as they don't use force or fraud against peaceful people.

3. The Liberty Papers
We are a group of people who hold some very specific beliefs. We believe that the theories of individual, inherent rights and government of what is now known as classic liberal theory are the correct political theory. We believe that failing to understand the reality of market economics, individual motivation, and politics leads to tragedy as the world has seen so many times over in Russia, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Iraq, Zimbabwe, Yugoslavia, Cuba, France and many other places around the world. The Declaration of Independence is not just the document that told the British Crown that its American colonies were an independent nation. It is a Declaration that henceforth men would no longer be subject to oppressive government that traded their individual liberties and rights for the paternalism of government. It is the best single expression and declaration of the rights and responsibilities of the individual, including the source of the powers of government. We believe that the United States Constitution is the best attempt by man to take these ideas and turn them into practical, political reality.

4. Pagan Vigil
A libertarian perspective by NeoWayland. Pagan philosopher, libertarian, and part-time trouble maker, NeoWayland watches for threats to individual freedom or personal responsiblity. There's more to life than just black and white, using only extremes just increases the problems. Usually published weekdays with an opinion piece on the weekend. [note: While we're certainly appreciative of Pagan Vigil's linking to ShadowMonkey, we're not quite sure why he put us in the "Anarchy" section of links. We believe that government has a necessary role in society -- just that its role has been expanded too much and it tends to forget that its power is derived from the people. -sm]

5. Chronicles of Dissent
This blog, hosted by the privacy-centric pogowasright.org, is fairly new to me, but I'm consistently impressed with the materials they post.

That's it for now then. Do you have additional blogs you think should have been awardees? Suggest them in the comments below and we'll look into adding them to our link directory.

The Thinking Blogger Award rules:

  1. If, and only if, you get tagged in the list above as a Thinking Blogger, and you wish to participate, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,
  2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,
  3. Optional: Proudly display the 'Thinking Blogger Award' image with a link to the post that you wrote.

Tell Your Congress Person This Either Your With The Terrorists (Bush/Cheney) Or Your With Us (The Citizens Of The Unitrd States)And If There Not Going To Impeach These Criminals Than When Justice Comes They Will Be Tried And Convicted Right Along Side Of Bush/Cheney As Co Conspiritors. Just Like The Nazis Were At The End Of Wwii At Neuremberg. There Not Above The Law Either If They Don't Defend The Constitution Against All Enemys Both Foreign And Domestic. They Took A Solomn Oath To Defend The Constitution Of The United States. Now Are You Wiyh The Constitution Or Are You With The Terrorist. You Will Be Held Accountable.
