Ironic, really, that President Bush would choose to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution this week with a presidential proclamation. Even more ironic, however, are the tributes to liberty and freedom that he chose to include: "...we celebrate the Hungarians who defied an empire to demand their liberty...." It would be ever so sweet were the situation to become even more ironic: Imagine tens of thousands of Americans marching through the streets to call for freedom from Mr. Bush's anti-liberty, anti-Constitution policies. Imagine a presidential proclamation fifty years from now recognizing the effort of American students, workers and other citizens who tore the veil of tyranny from their eyes and demanded that the government abide by the Constitution and remember that it's power is derived from the consent of the citizens. Imagine the Americans of today once again representing the triumph of liberty over tyranny. Just last month, Hungarians once again took to the streets to protest -- this time to raise their voices against a prime minister who admitted in an audio recording to lying to his people to win an election. An estimated 10,000-15,000 people gathered each night in Budapest during the protests over a politician lying! We citizens of the United States have also been lied to. We have been misled, been the subject of propagandizing by our own government, seen sex and bribery scandals run rampant through our Congress, and had our Constitution trampled on by those sworn to serve and uphold it. And yet, the majority of Americans just sit back, take it in as 'politics as usual,' and maybe -- just maybe -- resolve to make a greater effort to get out and vote next time.... Mr. Bush is right. We could learn a lot from the Hungarians.
