Bear with me for a moment while I address a small list of issues that citizens and the press have raised regarding President Bush and his administration insomuch as his policies may have either disregarded or skirted the very edges of protections guaranteed in the Constitution.
  • the use at unprecedented levels of 'signing statements' to express disagreement with, or plans to disregard in certain circumstances, laws passed by the U.S. Congress.
  • consistent public and judicial appeals aimed at preventing journalistic and legal investigations into executive branch actions.

  • use of emergency executive powers to circumvent judicial review of actions such a detainee treatment, trials, etc.
  • the appointment of partisan judges.
  • the establishment of wide-ranging government departments charged, in part, with investigating the actions of American citizens (DHS) and implementing policies that result in use of our own intelligence agencies against us and the warrantless interception of communications by citizens (NSA).
  • attempted use of military tribunals to try detainees without due process, and the holding of American citizens without charges or legal representation for extended periods of time.
  • use of covert oversees prisons by the CIA to which persons were taken for incarceration and interrogation, and the of the Guantanamo facility to prevent detainees/prisoners from entering our domestic judicial process.
  • disregarding clear limitations on government power as spelled out in the Constitution and manipulating the system of checks and balances among the branches of government.
  • disregard of, and, in some cases, outright open contempt for, opinions, judicial rulings, and legislation contrary to the administration's views and policies.
OK. So... a pretty clear list that contains nothing that hasn't been read many times before by people across the nation -- some of whom would agree with the statements, and some of whom would not. Now, though, take a look at the following list, taken directly from the list of grievances against King George of England enumerated in the Declaration of Independence:
  • He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
  • He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
  • He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
  • He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
  • He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.

  • For depriving us, in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
  • For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
  • For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
  • In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Now, for the sake of convenience, here are the lists with the corresponding items from each put together:

Interesting. ...a thought-provoking correlation between the actions of King George of England more than 200 years ago that led to the American Revolution and the actions of President George Bush in present-day America.

Hello Shad,
Great piece! The Ebglish King George III was also subject to fits of insanity and during these episodes he had to be locked up in the palace until the madness passed. Dubya seems to have the same problem; Capitol Hill Blue reported, a year or two ago, that Bush was being treated by psychiatrists and taking drugs to control his raging outbursts.
Another point of comparison: The Enlgish King George was a German and spoke little English. Dubya is a Texan from New Haven, Connecticut; he has a ranch but is afraid of horses and Cindy Sheehan. But it's at the ranch that we see Bush at his best. Man, can he clear brush!

On the website Capitol Hill Blue there are two articles pertaining to Bush's erratic behavior; March 25, 2006 "Is Bush Flipping out? and March 24, 2006, "A Drunken Dubya". There was an article published on June 4, 2004, citing Bush's use of drugs to control his mood swings, but it was pulled for reasons of journalistic efficacy: Doug Thompson used the wrong psychiatrist's name in the piece and, by his own admission, failed to follow up adequately on the sources; some were second-hand or third-hand remarks. But the article did appear and the two I referred to at the opening are still there.

Just to play devil's advocate with these provocative bullit points.
Executive orders have been used by our presidents and though freedoms chiseled away,"express disagreement"is not a crime, and "certain circumstances" becomes eligible for review and investigation. Keeping executive actions classified is a right we give presidents. Yes,even oral sex. Making "judicial appeals" is not a crime.
Detainee from where? Taliban fighters? Insurgents? Detainee treatment is always questionable, even in our own jail and prison institutions. Have you been detained as a result of the patriot act? Your neighbor or even anybody that you know? Probably not as many as the signers of the Declaration knew of.
"Partison judges," again is a power we give to out president for selecting Supreme Court Judges. They go through a congressional hearing and process.
"Investigating actions of American citizens" isn't a new concept. Overseas communications have been monitored for years. Now we have internet surveillance not just from King George, but every web master out there.
Military detainees referred to as "us"; "For depriving us,in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury":doesn't fly. Again, how many people do you actually know who are now detained,
in contrast to the signers of the Declaration. POW's would be a better definition, since war has been declared on "us". Do you actually believe these detainees share any aspiration to the desire for freedom from English dominion. The only dominion they had is a doctrine of Islamic beliefs. Don't forget the words "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." There is no government in the world that expresses God or Creator as the one who "gives" us our freedoms These detainees that embrace the so called peaceful religion also believe that you should convert or die. In case anyone forgot, "we,us" were attacked by Islamic Jihad, on September 11, 2001. It's good however to be able to voice your discontent without being jailed. You don't like George W and that's ok to say so, cause you have that God given right in this country to say so. But the many signers of the Declaration of Independence met tragic ends. So don't overlook what we do have, and George W won't be around much longer. This country made it through every president we've ever had, we'll get through the Bush era, and maybe, just maybe someday you may learn that the guy might have done the best he knew how. Afterall, we are now in a war with a fundamentalist Islamic Jihad; And history shows those can last 100s of years. But, you can just blame it on Bush. Only in America.

I find it interesting that a majority of Americans are so wrapped up in things like what will happen next on their favorite soap opera, or who will be the next American Idol, that they fail to see things like this. The Patriot Act, the Real ID act, the "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America"...
