Freedom Quote

No nation ancient or modern ever lost the liberty of freely speaking, writing, or publishing their sentiments, but forthwith lost their liberty in general and became slaves.

Homeland Security publishes full REAL ID regulation E-mail
Friday, 09 March 2007

repeal_real_idicon The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has published the full text of its proposed regulations on the REAL ID minimum standards for driver's licenses and identification cards to be accepted by Federal agencies in the March 9, 2007, Federal Register.

REAL ID establishes what is, in effect, a national ID card system. Security expert Bruce Schneier describes the program thus:

The United States is getting a national ID card. The REAL ID Act (text of the bill and the Congressional Research Services analysis of the bill) establishes uniform standards for state driver's licenses, effectively creating a national ID card. It's a bad idea, and is going to make us all less safe. It's also very expensive. And it's all happening without any serious debate in Congress.

Homeland Security Department's summary of proposed regulations :

The Department of Homeland Security is proposing to establish minimum standards for State-issued driver's licenses and identification cards that Federal agencies would accept for official purposes after May 11, 2008, in accordance with the REAL ID Act of 2005. This rule proposes standards to meet the minimum requirements of the REAL ID Act of 2005, including: information and security features that must be incorporated into each card; application information to establish the identity and immigration status of an applicant before a card can be issued; and physical security standards for locations where driver's licenses and applicable identification cards are issued.

And there we are -- one step closer to a national tracking system.

"All right now! Everyone in line! Get your ID out."

"Officer? Um...I don't have my ID."

"No ID, huh? Stay there. ....Captain? Smith here. We've got another one with no ID. OK, will do."

"What's the problem officer?"

"Shut up, you! Get over there in the holding pen with the other noncomplyers."

"But Officer, I'm..."

"Do it now!"

To quote author Robert Heinlein's novel Time Enough for Love :

"When a place gets crowded enough to require ID's, social collapse is not far away. It is time to go elsewhere."

OK, so what's next? How about mandatory firearm registration? A federal depository of your medical records?

Wake the hell up, people!
