Hiding ourselves away has never been the method through which we have
shown individuals and nations the benefits of our way of life, for we
know that a strong, though sometimes subtle, weapon in the arsenal of
freedom is simple exposure to our society. "Come see what it's like.
Let us plant the seeds of liberty in your mind." Now, though, a U.S.
Senator wants to close our doors to this type of example.

The California Legislature is petitioning the Congress to enact a federal shield law to protect journalists. California already has such a law but argues that a federal law is needed to protect journalistic freedom.
The real issue here is, I believe, not journalistic integrity or even my beloved freedom of speech. No friends, it is much deeper than that. I am sadly afraid that we have now reached a point in our country’s history where one more step in the wrong direction will plunge us headlong into a bona fide police state.

This policy instructs all NSA employees to "actively" watch for
unauthorized disclosures of classified information in the press and
online (including blogs), and to report such disclosures to the
authorities.

The New York Times reports scientists have developed a detailed influenza test that takes less than 12 hours; this new technology, a microchip covered with bits of genetic material from many different flu strains, cuts the time needed for diagnosis of the H5N1 flu to less than a day. (See item 30)
